题目:构式语法能为对比语言学研究带来哪些启示?
What can Construction Grammar offer to contrastive linguistics?

内容简介:
In this talk, I will discuss how cross-linguistic studies that adopt a contrastive perspective can benefit from conceptual and methodological tools from Construction Grammar. My starting point will be a set of English grammatical constructions, including the comparative alternation (prouder, more proud), verb-first conditionals (Had I known this, I would have stayed at home), and constructions of future time reference (will, shall, be going to). I will compare these constructions to their counterparts in other languages, using a variety of corpus-based, quantitative techniques. I will argue that adopting a constructional perspective is a useful strategy insofar as it can direct attention to relevant parameters that would not be detected in an analysis of a single language. Second, cross-linguistic comparisons of constructions are apt test cases for functional motivations that have been proposed on the basis of single language studies. Third, by adapting quantitative techniques to the purpose of contrastive analyses, we can extend our methodological toolkit, answer new research questions, and develop research protocols that can be applied to comparative studies in other languages.
第二讲:12月8日(16:00-18:00 北京时间)
题目:为何自然语言中的语法元素比词汇元素分布更加均衡?
Why are grammatical elements more evenly dispersed than lexical elements?
腾讯会议号:591-523-595(密码:202312)
内容简介:
Grammatical elements such as determiners, conjunctions, or pronouns are very evenly dispersed across natural language data. By contrast, the usage events of lexical elements have a stronger tendency to occur in bursts that are interspersed by long lulls. This talk will consider two alternative explanations for this difference. First, it could be hypothesized that the more even distribution of grammatical elements is merely an effect of high text frequency. Alternatively, it could be argued that a more even distribution is a symptom of greater generality in meaning. In order to assess the impact of both frequency and semantic generality, a corpus-based study is conducted in order to contrast lexical and grammatical elements in Present-Day English.
