讲座内容:Appropriate and precise diction (i.e., the use of words and phrases) is crucial for successful academic writing. Drawing on his extensive experience in academic writing as an author, instructor, and journal reviewer/editor, the speaker will first discuss, with many specific authentic examples, the importance and challenges of using correct language with the right style in academic writing for L2 English writers. The discussion will show that while L2 English writers often tend to use informal diction, they are also prone to using inappropriate and/or incorrect formal words and phrases. The speaker will then demonstrate how the use of corpora can help l2 English writers identify and address lexicogrammatical choice problems that are often found in L2 English academic writing. In the process, some useful corpora and corpus query tools and techniques for academic writing enhancement will be introduced along with their specific functions. The speech will end with a brief mention of the challenges involved in corpus (and AI) use and the strategies that can be used to overcome the challenges.
