This lecture examines the progress made since 2013 on China's Maritime Belt and Road starting with the ‘String of Pearls' in the Indian Ocean and continuing with China's port interests in Europe. However, maritime development is not just a question of port infrastructure, it also involves the fleet employed to move the goods, and the shipyards needed to build them. The second part of the lecture will speculate on developments in the near future - those arising from decisions by China's partners/competitors.
