Competition between constructions and lexeme-specific variability

内容提要：

Languages often allow speakers to express the same idea in two or more different ways. For example, the English comparative can be formed morphologically (prouder) or periphrastically (more proud). Speakers’ choices between those variants have been understood as competition between two schematic constructions. Different variables, such as the length of the adjective, its phonological characteristics, and the broader syntactic context, are known to influence that choice. At the same time, specific adjectives exhibit preferences that cannot be fully explained as a function of those variables. This talk tries to reconcile this lexeme-specific variability with the competition between constructions. A corpus analysis shows that the frequency of adjectives in comparative forms correlates with the strength of bias for one variant over the other. These findings support the view that competition occurs at multiple levels of schematicity.

The role of associations in knowledge of language

内容提要：

In linguistics, the notion of association is often understood against the background of behaviorism. Chomsky (1959) has famously argued that linguistic competence cannot be reduced to a fixed set of responses to learned stimuli. Recently however, associations have made a veritable comeback in linguistic theory, so that for example Schmid (2016) argues that “that linguistic knowledge is available in one format only, namely, associations.” This talk will discuss the factors that have led to this paradigm shift, and it will outline the different types of associations that are at work in speakers’ knowledge of language.

主讲人简介：

Martin Hilpert教授，博士毕业于美国莱斯大学语言学系，后在美国加州大学伯克利分校计算机科学学院从事博士后研究。现为瑞士纳沙泰尔大学（Université de Neuchâtel）分管教学副校长，语言学学科负责人，大连海事大学客座教授（2024-2027年）。主要从事构式语法、认知语言学、语料库语言学等方面研究。曾任SSCI刊物Functions of Language主编（2014-2025年），现为SSCI刊物Cognitive Linguistics副主编，以及Constructions and Frames和English Language and Linguistics等刊物的编委会成员。此外，Martin Hilpert教授还曾应邀在日本、法国、西班牙等地举办的认知语言学、构式语法、语料库语言学国际学术会议上进行过主旨发言，并于2018年获得瑞士政府颁发的“最佳教学奖”。
